It was super fun to see what goes on behind the scenes. They were trying to make a big banner I had brought fit into the shot. When it didn't, they had to scramble to get it down before we aired live. We weren't even seated yet when the camera man started counting down. Adrenaline was a pumping!

JO-ANN GREENE, Books Editor

Santa enjoys giving gifts, thereby ingratiating himself with everyone.

How about his reindeer? Don't they deserve a little appreciation for hauling him around as he delivers the goods?

Dasher decides the reindeer, too, should experience the joy of giving and be recognized for their generosity. He has a plan:

To give our reindeer rep a lift,
We'll leave a special reindeer gift.

A Christmas tradition is born in "The Reindeer Gift," a new children's picture book featuring the lively verse of Elizabeth Passo, Camp Hill, and the bold illustrations of Jon Carraher, Dillsburg.

Passo, a Millersville University graduate, dreamed up the premise of the book as she strove to make one Christmas gift very special to her daughter, whom she refers to as "my 11-year-old muse."

"It didn't seem right to just put it under the tree or in a stocking. I wanted to create more of a fun event for the gift," she says.

So she hid it in the house and said a reindeer brought it.

Reindeer sneak down the chimney behind Santa and work fast so he's none the wiser, according to the book. Gifts go into unlikely places, including a cookie jar, under a mattress.

Hiding reindeer gifts is fun!
Beats just waiting between runs.
That was such an awful bore.
We should have thought of this before.

Passo, an English education major in college and a former teacher, hopes her book and its related website will start a fun, new family tradition.

Young readers who find a special reindeer gift of their own can go to the interactive website, reindeergift.com, and find out which of the eight reindeer hid the gift. (The service is free.)

"Was it feisty Vixen? Donner the sports star? Graceful Dancer? Organic Blitzen? Comet, the fastest reindeer of all?"

The hardcover book, with 41 full-color, full-page illustrations, is available for $19.95 at reindeergift.com.

In the end, the reindeer decide:

It's official;
Giving gifts is beneficial.
